Dear Mr. Nooning,

Regarding your recent Research Request for information on Jennie Hannah Grimes:

1. The marriage license application for Jennie H. Grimes and John P. Groom states that Francis Grimes is Jennie's parent. Marriage took place at Wilmore, PA. Copy of marriage application is enclosed.

2. With above information, I checked the 1860 Census and found Francis Grimes (age 42) living in Summerhill Township. He was a farmer, born in Ireland, married to Susan (age 23) born in PA. Also in household: Mary J. (3), Elizabeth C. (2), Matilda A. (5 mo), and Francis Grimes (16), farm laborer. Copy enclosed.

3. Because Jennie Hannah and John were married in Wilmore, and that is a Catholic area, I consulted Catholic Vital Records of Central Pennsylvania, a five volume set of books containing Catholic record transcriptions from 1793-1869. First, I found the 1867 birth of Hannah Grimes, confirming that Francis Grimes and Susan Crum were her parents. I then checked for other children of Francis and Susan. Most of these entries use the Latin forms of names. An explanation is enclosed. Marriage record of Francis Grimes and Susan Crum also included. In addition, I found a birth record for Susan Crum and a marriage record for her parents. All are included.

4. 1870 Census Summerhill Township shows Francis Grimes with same children from 1860 but no wife, Susan. Copy enclosed. My guess is that she died, although I found no record to confirm that.

5. 1880 Census White Township shows Francis Grimes married to Bridget. 17 year old son named Augustus. This is probably son Daniel A. who was named in 1870 Census. Copy enclosed.

6. 1886 obituary for Francis Grimes and reading of St. Augustine Cemetery showing burial of Francis Grimes. Copies enclosed.

7. You mentioned that Hannah had a sister Sally and the baptismal records show a sister Sarah. I found Sarah in the 1870 Census, Croyle Township. Copy enclosed.

8. 1880 Census, Croyle Township, listing for Sady (Sally or Sarah) Grimes.
As you can see, it does not appear that Hannah was orphaned. Rather my guess is that her mother died and the younger children were "farmed out." Her father appears to have remarried (probably around 1871, by age of daughter Bridget in 1880 Census). I hope you find this information helpful. I may be able to find more information on Hannah's family given more time.

Francis Grimes

The following information as told to Robert G. Nooning Sr. came from John E. Groome at his home in Harrisburg, PA around 1981. Jennie Hannah Grimes had brothers James, Gus, and sister Sally who married a Reinart or Reinhart. End of information from John E. Groome.

Entry by Robert G. Nooning Sr 7-10-2007
I received a letter back from the Blair County Historical Society on 7-9-2007 with the following information. In the 1860 Census, living next door to the Glesson’s in Cambria County, Summerhill, PA, on page 468, was a Francis Grimes, and seem to be the only Grimes in the neighborhood. After verifying the Census record, the Grimes were indeed living next door to the Glesson’s. They were absent in the 1870 Census, and someone else was living where the Grimes had been. The data entered for this Grimes family is from the 1860 Census record, and a record from the Saint Augustine Catholic Cemetery. It is not positive identification of the parents of Jeannie Hannah and James Grimes. It matches Jennie Hannah's Census records that her father was from Ireland, and the mother born in PA.

My belief is that Susan Grimes passed away from possibly complications of childbirth, and her husband, Francis, being 19 years older, was unable to care for the younger children. Jennie Hannah Grimes was born in 1867, and Francis would have been 49 years old.

Entry by Robert G. Nooning Sr 7-19-2007
I received the following letter from The Cambria County Historical Society verifying my beliefs about Francis Grimes. The following information is verbatim from that letter.

Dear Mr.

Philip Riley (Riely)

The 1870 Census record, Blair County, Gaysport, PA that has the following listed:
John Groom 40 Ireland Brakeman, PA Railroad.
Sarah Riley 22 Ireland Keeping House
John Riley 10 Ireland At Home
Mary Riley 8 PA At Home
George Riley 6 PA At Home
Philip Riley 80 PA At Home
Edward Riley 24 PA At Home
Sarah Riley 70 PA At Home

There were 2 Sarah Riley’s in this household. I believe that the Census taker made mistakes on names, ages, birth places and who was with who, and the family should be listed as:
1870 Census record, Blair County, Gaysport, PA
John Groom 40 Ireland Brakeman, PA Railroad.
Sarah Groom 32 Ireland Keeping House (I believe the age should be 32, not 22)
John Groom 10 Ireland At Home
Mary Groom 8 PA At Home
George Groom 6 PA At Home
Philip Riley 80 PA At Home Father-In-Law
(Age in 1880 Census also 80. Should age be 70. Birth place should be Ireland)
Sarah Riley 70 PA At Home Mother-In-Law (Birth place should be Ireland)
Edward Riley 24 PA At Home Brother-In-Law

Either Sarah’s age was listed wrong, or she is 22 and the sister of Edward. However, the ages of Philip and Sarah seem to make this unlikely. I believe the age should be 32, not 22 AEB her brother John in the 1880 Census and Edward in the 1870 and 1880 Census. In 1870, John would have been 36 and Edward 24.
It is possible that John was married, had children John, age 10 (matches birth year of John P. + or - 1), Mary, age 8 (Mary Helen?), George, age 6, and his wife died. He may have remarried Sarah Riley, age 22, and then had children Walter, Michael and Ella.

There were 2 Sarah Riley’s in this household. I believe that the Census taker made mistakes on names, ages, birth places and who was with who, and the family should be listed as:

Edward Riley 24 PA At Home Brother-In-Law

The above corrected Census information is confirmed by the Catholic Vital Records of Central Pennsylvania, 1793-1869. In the hands of Robert G. Nooning Sr., is the marriage names and date for John Groom and Sarah Johanna Riely. Also in hand is the birth and baptism dates of John Groom and children John P., Mary E., and George Groom.

All of the Census records for the last name spelling as Riley. The Catholic Vital Records have the spelling as Riely. Reason is still unknown. The spelling as Riely is used in the marriage record, and the birth records of John P,, Mary E., and George Groom (Groome). There is no middle initial or middle name listed in the baptism record of George Groom.

Also, In the 1870 Census, John Groom was listed as a brakeman on the PA Railroad. Michael was supposed to have been killed as a brakeman on the PA Railroad and George worked on the railroad as well.

The 1880 Census of the Riley’s in Blair County, Gaysport, PA, has listed with them George Groom, age 15. It also has the Edward Riley and Philip Riley from the 1870 Census. There are 12 Riley’s on this page, and it may be hard to sort out who was connected to who for the Census taker. There is also listed a Bridget Riley, age 8 and 2 other children, ages 6 and 2. This could be Ella B. (Ella Bridget?) and they have the ages and names mixed up. Ella B. was born in 1877. John Groom, Sarah Groom, and Sarah Riley are not found in the 1880 Census in Blair County. This would make sense if both Sarah and John Groom died between 1877 and 1880.

John Groom Sr.

Groom Name Meaning and History
English (common in East Anglia): occupational name for a servant or a shepherd, from Middle English Grom (e) ‘boy’, ‘servant’ (of uncertain origin), which in some places was specialized to mean ‘shepherd’.

The last name listed in the Catholic Vital Records of Central Pennsylvania was spelled as Grom instead of Groom for the birth of John Groom, born in 1834. The 1850 Census record has the correct spelling of Groom.

I, Robert G. Nooning Sr. also remember John E. Groome telling me that the family story is that 2 Groome brothers came to America. One settled in PA and 1 in VA. The coming of the Groome brothers was somewhat prior to the American Civil War, and John E. Groome explained that it was a case of brother against brother during the war.

The connection may or may not go back to Ireland. It is Robert G. Nooning Sr’ s belief that John E. Groome’s story is correct. I, Robert G. Nooning Sr., believe that the 2 brothers did come over prior to The Civil War, and another relative (brother, cousin, etc.) came over later AEB John P. Groome's Census records that his parents came from Ireland.

My memory is that John E. Groome told me, Robert G. Nooning Sr., that John C. Groome Sr. was a distant uncle or cousin, and that he helped start the PA State Police.

In researching historical records on 5-23-2007, I, Robert G. Nooning Sr. came across newspaper articles from 2 sources in PA. They were about John C. Groome Sr. and John C. Groome Jr. These articles confirm the information about the PA State Police. The location of the newspaper articles was Ancestry.com, PA search, Census records. Under all of the records is The Clearfield County newspaper and The Indiana Evening Gazette. Their records span many years and a search under Groome produced many records.

This John C. Groome did indeed help to start the PA State Police and was known as Captain John C. Groome, Colonel John C. Groome, and then Superintendent John C. Groome of the PA State Police between 1900 and 1920. He left in 1920 to pursue other business interests with The Boca Raton Corporation.

For those wishing to research the Groome surname further and the connection to John C. Groome, I, Robert G. Nooning Sr., have placed in this location, the Census records I have found on John C. Groome. These Census records are in descending order following the John C. Groome line. They are entered into the scrapbook section.
