From Nikki Gillespie to Robert G. Nooning Sr., 6-27-2007.
My father's parents were Alice Veronica Pitfield (not sure if one t or two) and Phillip Collin (called PC) Gillespie. Their children were from oldest down: Lucille, Victor and Alice. My grandmother had 3 spinster sisters, Marie, Carrie and Nanny. PC was in the jewelry business and owned Gillespie Jewelers in Pgh. Pa. with his brothers Paul,
Augustyn and another one I think.Date of birth calculated from the 1910 Census record, and the note below from Lucy. The 1920 Census record has the birth dates wrong.
From Lucy, daughter of Alice Mae Gillespie.
I can correct the information that you sent to me, basically since I have it. There were four children in the family of PC Gillespie and Alice Pitfield Gillespie:Philip R. b. 1897Lucille b. 1899 Victor b. 1900Alice Mae b. 1915 my MomI always said that Alice Mae must have been quite a surprise to her parents!! Her siblings were all teenagers when she was born. The Gillespie Brothers jewelry company was run by four Gillespie brothers: Augustin, Carl, Paul and Philip Collins ("PC"). It's an intriguing mystery as to what happened to the money, since I know that during her growing up years, PC's family lived well. He sold the business in early 1929 to Lucille's husband Chess Getsinger. My mother recalled 1930 as a disastrous years for her since her mother died and they lost their money. I theorize that PC probably invested the proceeds from the sale of the jewelry store in the stock market, which, as you probably know had it's famous crash in the fall of 1929.
This family would match the description by the great granddaughter, Nia Smith, below. They had 4 servants, and a 5th listed as a cook in the 1920 Census. They owned their home. The 1930 Census, after the stock market crash, they were down to having 1 maid, and renting. It's obvious that this family was affected by the great stock market crash of 1929.
From Nia Smith, granddaughter of Frank K. Peabody, 6-29-2007.
"My great grandfather was very wealthy. My grandfather grew up in boarding schools. Peabody High and everything in the Pittsburgh area with that name was indeed named after him. My grandfather gave up the family money because he hated how he was brought up and decided his family would not be raised that way...thats all I know"..love yaFrom Nikki Gillespie 6-29-2007.
In 1890, the high school was moved to West Capitol and Gaines Street and was named Peabody High School. The school was named in honor of philanthropist George Peabody, who donated millions of dollars to Southern states after the Civil War for building school systems. Little Rock received nearly $200,000 from Peabody. It was the largest sum given to any Southern city. In 1905, Peabody High School was abandoned and a new high school, named Little Rock Senior High, opened at 14th and Scott Streets.1920 Census, father born in NY, mother from Germany.
1930 Census father born in NY, mother in Ohio.

This family matches the place of birth of Ohio for Frank E. Peabody Jr, with the father born in NY, and the mother in OH.
