From Nikki Gillespie to Robert G. Nooning Sr., 6-27-2007.
My father's parents were Alice Veronica Pitfield (not sure if one t or two) and Phillip Collin (called PC) Gillespie. Their children were from oldest down: Lucille, Victor and Alice. My grandmother had 3 spinster sisters, Marie, Carrie and Nanny. PC was in the jewelry business and owned Gillespie Jewelers in Pgh. Pa. with his brothers Paul,
Augustyn and another one I think.Birth, death and marriage date from Lucy Newell Russell. The 1920 Census record has the birth dates wrong.
From Lucy, daughter of Alice Mae Gillespie.
I can correct the information that you sent to me, basically since I have it. There were four children in the family of PC Gillespie and Alice Pitfield Gillespie:Philip R. b. 1897Lucille b. 1899 Victor b. 1900Alice Mae b. 1915 my MomI always said that Alice Mae must have been quite a surprise to her parents!! Her siblings were all teenagers when she was born. The Gillespie Brothers jewelry company was run by four Gillespie brothers: Augustin, Carl, Paul and Philip Collins ("PC"). It's an intriguing mystery as to what happened to the money, since I know that during her growing up years, PC's family lived well. He sold the business in early 1929 to Lucille's husband Chess Getsinger. My mother recalled 1930 as a disastrous years for her since her mother died and they lost their money. I theorize that PC probably invested the proceeds from the sale of the jewelry store in the stock market, which, as you probably know had it's famous crash in the fall of 1929.From Robert G. Nooning Sr.
Charles Gillespie Sr. was a shoemaker in the 1860 Census. His son, Charles Gillespie Jr., was listed as a jeweler. Charles Gillespie Jr's son's, Phillip, Augustin, Paul and Carl started Gillespie jewelers in Pittsburgh, PA.
