Michael Bombich

Mill Laborer in 1900 Census.

The Bombich family is of Polish descent. They are not German. The 1900 and 1920 Census records state both Poland and/or Germany as the birth place for Michael and Katarina Bombich. The Germany connection, in Robert G. Nooning Sr's estimation, is for 1 or 2 reasons.

1) The particular portion of Poland may have been annexed by Germany at the time of their birth or immigration to America.

2) Michael and Katarina Bombich may have immigrated from Poland via Germany as Germany may have been a more readily available country to immigrate from at the time.

The family story is that Michael and Katarina met "on the boat" coming to America, and later married. However, Michael's listed year of immigration on the census record is 1887, and Katarina's listed year of immigration on the census record is 1882.

Chess Getsinger

From Lucy, daughter of Alice Mae Gillespie. I always said that Alice Mae must have been quite a surprise to her parents!! Her siblings were all teenagers when she was born. The Gillespie Brothers jewelry company was run by four Gillespie brothers: Augustin, Carl, Paul and Philip Collins ("PC"). It's an intriguing mystery as to what happened to the money, since I know that during her growing up years, PC's family lived well. He sold the business in early 1929 to Lucille's husband Chess Getsinger. My mother recalled 1930 as a disastrous years for her since her mother died and they lost their money. I theorize that PC probably invested the proceeds from the sale of the jewelry store in the stock market, which, as you probably know had it's famous crash in the fall of 1929.

Marie (Mary) Lucille Gillespie

From Nikki Gillespie to Robert G. Nooning Sr., 6-27-2007.
My father's parents were Alice Veronica Pitfield (not sure if one t or two) and Phillip Collin (called PC) Gillespie. Their children were from oldest down: Lucille, Victor and Alice. My grandmother had 3 spinster sisters, Marie, Carrie and Nanny. PC was in the jewelry business and owned Gillespie Jewelers in Pgh. Pa. with his brothers Paul,
Augustyn and another one I think.

Date of birth calculated from the 1910 Census record, and the note below from Lucy. The 1920 Census record has the birth dates wrong.
From Lucy, daughter of Alice Mae Gillespie.
I can correct the information that you sent to me, basically since I have it. There were four children in the family of PC Gillespie and Alice Pitfield Gillespie: Philip R. b. 1897 Lucille b. 1899 Victor b. 1900 Alice Mae b. 1915 my Mom I always said that Alice Mae must have been quite a surprise to her parents!! Her siblings were all teenagers when she was born. The Gillespie Brothers jewelry company was run by four Gillespie brothers: Augustin, Carl, Paul and Philip Collins ("PC"). Henry W. Stone

Henry Stone born in NY. Father and mother born in Vermont per the 1880 Census.

1855 NY State Census Town of Berlin (Many errors in this record including ages)
STONE, Henry W. 42 m Herkimer marr 35 farmer nv planked $200
Martha 44 f wife Rens marr 44
Jonathan 20 m child Rens 20 farmer
Aurelia 17 f child Rens 17 bosom maker (Orcelia)
Samuel 15 m child Rens 15 farmer
Edmond B. 13 m child Rens 13 (Edgar)
Mary A. 11 f child Rens 11
Franklin J. 4 m child Rens 4

The 1860 Census record of Henry W. Stone in Rennselaer County, Berlin, NY, has the birth dates of the children incorrectly listed. Orcelia, Mary, and Edgar's birth date have been proven incorrect AEB other Census records. The birth date for her sister Mary is incorrect AEB the 1920 Census of Martha Nooning Hull. Edgar's birth date was off AEB the 1900 Census of the Edgar Stone family in Westerlo, NY. The 1870 Census of Henry W. Stone is accurate.

In addition, the circumstantial evidence is strong enough to enter this family into the Nooning Family Tree. Orcelia was born in NY, mother born in NY according to all Census records. The father's birth place in the 1860 Census is VT. The 1880 Census for Orcelia said it was NY. The 1910 Census for Orcelia said he was from England. The birth place listed for the father from the Census records from Mary and Edgar all say the birth place of the father was NY.

The family names given to Orcelia's children seem to come from her family-Orcelia's mother's name was Martha, she named a daughter Martha. Orcelia's father's name was Henry W. If the W was for Wallace or William she named a son William Wallace. William Wallace Nooning, son of Orcelia, named his son Malcolm Henry. Orcelia's brother was Edgar, she named a son Edgar. Orcelia had a sister Mary, she named a daughter May Margaret. There is also a Mary A. Clark, age 71. living with Orcelia's daughter, Martha A. Nooning Hull in the 1910 Census, Rennselaer County, Troy, NY. She is listed as an aunt. As mentioned above, Orcelia had a sister Mary and she would have been Martha's aunt..

Last but not least, the Stone family was from Rennselaer County, Berlin, NY. That is exactly where Orcelia M. Stone and Thomas A. Nooning were married on March 21, 1859, according to the pension application. Since Thomas A. Nooning was a farm laborer, she very well could have lived with her parents at the time of the 1860 Census while he was away. The Census taker recorded the data on June 16, 1860. Thomas would have been working on a farm at this time for planting season. He was a farmer prior to The Civil War. Thomas A. Nooning and Orcelia were married by Rev. Elder Coon, who, by the way, lived next door to the Stone family in the 1860 Census.

Shelley

The spelling of the last name Shelley is not verified. Malcolm H. Nooning Jr., verified to Robert G. Nooning Sr., that Florence Hagadorn was married and her married name was Shelley.

Florence Hagadorn

May have been a twin of Bessie B.

Willard Pickering

Marriage to Willard Pickering included AEB a hand written letter from Agnes Perras, niece of Ida May, and a typed letter from Gertrude Wheeler, related by marriage, both from Troy, NY, in 1983 to Robert G. Nooning Sr. Both state that Ida May was married to Willard Pickering and could have gone by the name of May Veronica.

This marriage was Ida May's (May Veronica) second marriage, and it was after the 1930 Census. There would have been no children from this marriage as Ida May was 45 in the 1930 Census.

Willard Pickering's first marriage is believed to be the following:
Rensselaer County Marriage Index, Volume II - Marriage Records Surnames April 1913 - July 1918 has the following record on Pickering: Pickering Willard Patrie Ruth L. 2 124 5618 November 17, 1913. This says Willard pickering married Ruth Patrie.

In a hand written letter from the niece of Ida May Nooning, Agnes Virginia Nooning Perras, from Troy, NY, to Robert G. Nooning Sr, dated 2-21-1983 and a typed letter from Gertrude Wheeler, also from Troy, NY in 1983.

She states that Ida May Nooning charged her name to Veronica and/or went by Veronica Nooning or Mary Veronica Nooning because she didn’t like Ida May.

Agnes Virginia Nooning Perras was the daughter of Mary Frances Nooning born 7-12-1903 to the parents of George Malcolm Nooning and Mary Frances Unknown. Again, Ida May/Veronica/May Veronica/Mary Veronica Nooning, was the aunt of Agnes Virginia Nooning Perras

Agnes Virginia Nooning Perras 12-22-1919 1-1995
Husband William Joseph Perras 4-21-1911 1-15-1995

She also stated that Veronica married a Willard Pickering. However, a marriage filing in the Rensselaer County Marriage Index, Volume II - Marriage Records Surnames April 1913 - July 1918 has the following record on Pickering: Pickering Willard Patrie Ruth L. 2 124 5618 November 17, 1913. This says Willard pickering married Ruth Patrie. There may be another Willard Pickering.

The 1910 Federal Census has Mary Nooning, head of household family in Troy, NY - Ida Gauley listed as daughter to Mary, and age 25. She (Ida) was also listed as a widow.

Rensselaer County Marriage Index Vol. 2
Nooning Ada B. Wallace Patrick F. 2 191 5954 March 9, 1914

1920 Census, in Troy, NY at age 35 is listed as Mae Gauley, widow, living with Eugene Vallee as head of household, with wife Mary Frances Nooning Vallee and single brother in law William Wallace Nooning.

The 1930 Census, in Troy, NY has her living with her sister, Mary Frances Vallee Smith and daughter Agnes Vallee as May Ganley (Gauley) at age 45. Married at age 19.

I, Robert G. Nooning Sr., have not found a death record in the SS Index for Ida Gauley or Mae Gauley-Ida Pickering or Mae Pickering that matches. She may have remarried an unknown.

6-4-2007-In a letter dated 1983 from Gertrude Wheeler, Troy, NY, there is an obituary on a William Wallace Nooning from 11-6-1948. This obit listed Mrs. Willard Pickering and Gertrude's notation is that this was Mary. This information would coincide with the Agnes Perras information that Ida May Nooning married Willard Pickering at some point. In this same letter, Gertrude mentions that Ida May Nooning turned out to be May Veronica, that she married a Ganley, and later married Pickering. The Pickering marriage had to be after 1930 as this Census has her at age 45, living with Mary Frances Smith, and both widows.
