The following information as told to Robert G. Nooning Sr. came from John E. Groome at his home in Harrisburg, PA around 1981. John E. Groome's father, John P. Groome, had brother Walter, George and Michael, sisters Helen and Ella.
Robert G. Nooning Sr was told by John E. Groome, that John P. Groome was born in Blair County, Hollidaysburg, PA, and raised in an orphanage. Also in that orphanage was Jennie Hannah Grimes and friend Annie Finnegan. They were then raised by the Glesson family, Cambria County, Ashville, PA.
1880 Census record, Portage, Canbria County, PA verified the information that John P. Groom was living with the Glesson's at age 20.

John P. Groom's mother may have passed abt 1870 after the Census or 1871. I, Robert G. Nooning Sr., believe that John P. Groom moved in with the Glesson's between 1871 and 1880 after his mother passed, and his father remarried Maria Brophy abt 1871 or 1872. His brother George Groom moved in with his uncle, John Riley. His half brother Michael, and half sister Ella B. Groom were listed with Maria (Mary) Brophy Groom.

This lady deserves honorable mention in the family tree. She was living with the Glesson family in the 1860 Census, Summerhill, Cambria County, PA at age 8, and the 1870 Census at age 18 when Jennie Hannah Grimes was living there at age 3. Annie Finnegan was also with the Glesson's in the 1880 Census, Portage, PA at age 28. John P. Groom was age 20 and Jennie Hannah Grimes was age 13. She remained with John and Jennie after they were married, and lived with them throughout their lives. She is also on the Tin Type photo with Jennie Hannah Grimes Groom as identified by John E. Groome in 1981. After John and Jennie passed away, she lived with William C. Groome and Lucy Farrell Groome (1930 Census) until she died.

Annie Finnegan liked to smoke her corncob pipe and was rarely found without it. When she was living her last years with the William Clair Groome Sr. family, she was also known to take a nip or two from a bottle in the basement and then replaced what she drank with water. Annie E. Finnegan age 28Annie, in the 1860 Census is listed as being age 11. In the 1870 Census, she is listed as age 21. I, Robert G. Nooning Sr., now believe that Annie E. Finnegan shaved 3 years off her age in the 1880 Census record. It appears that she should have been listed as age 31 instead of 28.
The family story is that her father was adopted by the Wylam family but didn't find out about it until later in life after he was married and had children. He found out that his real surname was Taylor and changed the family name back to Taylor from Wylam between 1910 and 1916.
Census records do not match with the above family story. Data entered for Thomas Taylor and Mary Segalini family is from the 1900 Census in Houtzdale, PA and 1910 Census in Houtzdale, PA
The Census records do not tell why the children, at least with Margaret S., has the birth certificate as Margaret Wylam, with parents Thomas and Mary Wylam. The baptism record names are the same for Margaret S.

My Mom married Rebel Jones in Riverside California back in 1965 or 66. Forget exactly which year. They went to Louisville then on to Tennessee where Reb was originally from. He passed away in the vet's hospital down there about 8 years ago. I can look all of this up when I'm at home to get the exact dates. I brought Mom up from TN around 2003. She passed away in her nursing home in Sept. of '05. That was DuPage Convalescent Center in Wheaton/Winfield IL. The picture of me and my siblings on my brother's guest book is summer of 2004 outside of the nursing home.
