Year of immigration is 1872 per the 1900 Census. John Francis Farrell would have been 16 years old at the time.
1900 Census, Philadelphia, PA, name spelled Farell, instead of Farrell, and Lucy as Louisa.
Mary had 8 children, 7 living.John Francis Farrell Jr. was elected at one time as a state representative in PA.
Per family history, the parents of James Francis Farrell Jr., were James Francis Farrell Sr., and Margaret Begley, both from Ireland.
Note from William Clair Groome Jr., b. 6-1918 to Robert G. Nooning Sr., 12-16-2007.
Am sure that my grandfather Farrell was born in Waterford County. My mother spoke often of this. Alice was the name of his wife--my grandmother. They did live in Philadelphia then moved to Houtzdale, PA.The conflict of where John Francis Farrell was born is that I, Robert G. Nooning Sr., and my sister Marilyn Nooning Miller Putman, remember our grandmother Lucy Dorothy Farrell Groome saying "My father was from County Cork". Considering that William Clair Groome Jr., was the son of Lucy Dorothy Farrell Groome, and he is sure that John Francis Farrell was born in Waterford county, next to Cork County, is closer to first hand information then my sister and I. Therefore, the place of birth for John Francis Farrell has been placed as Waterford County, Ireland.
The following was told to Robert G. Nooning Sr by Lucy Farrell Groome.
Lucy Farrell Groome's grandmother was Mary Whelan, from the Houtzdale, PA area. Mary Whelan's husband (Unknown) died young, and she ran a boarding house in Houtzdale, PA. Alice Whelan, was born out of wedlock to Mary Whelan, and went by the name Alice Yingling. Alice Yingling (Whelan) married John Francis Farrell. This story was also told by the Groome side of the family, notably Barbara Gene Groome Warden to Robert G. Nooning Sr., in June, 2007.
The above family story may be incorrect AEB the1880 Census and data listed below.
Mary's maiden name was Whelan, AEB a letter to Mary from her mother, signed Mary A. Whelan, in 1886, currently in the possession of Robert G. Nooning Sr. as of 5-23-2007, and the below Census record. The family story may be true if the below Census record is not the same Mary A. Whelan with the daughter of Mary Ann Whelan. If the family story is correct, she went by the name Alice Yingling. However, on all official documents found so far, she listed her name as Mary, not Alice, including both the 1910 and 1920 Census records. The 1930 Census record has her listed as Mary Alice Farrell. Her alias may very well have been Alice Yingling, but on official documents, the real name of Mary is very clear.
However, William Clair Groome Jr., related the same story to Robert G. Nooning Sr., 12-18-2007, and hearing the same family story from his mother, Lucy Dorothy Farrell, about his grandmother (Lucy's mother) Alice Farrell having the maiden name of Yingling, and being born out of wedlock to Mary A. Whelan..
Another mystery is what was really her real last name? We have the family oral story about Alice Yingling, a letter from Mary A. Whelan to her daughter, Mary Alice Farrell, and the death certificate of Lucy D. Farrell Groome Wilson saying her mother's maiden name was Alice Skelly, and Lucy's marriage certificate that say's her maiden name was Alice Skelley. What we know for sure is that her married name was Mary Alice Farrell, and that she went by her middle name Alice for every day use, and the first name Mary or Mary A. Farrell on all official documents found so far. There were 2 Skelly's, Jacob and Eleanora, who were the God Parents of 2 children of Francis Grimes and Susan Crum Grimes. Jacob did one, Eleanore another. It is unknown if these 2 Skelly's were married or brother and sister.

This may or may not be the family of our Mary A. Whelan Farrell. This record still has to be cross verified with other official documents. Mary A. Whelan is listed with this family at age 21 in the 1880 Census. She is also listed in the 1880 Census married to John F. Farrell. It is possible that she was listed out of habit by the Whelan family as she would have just been married to John F. Farrell in the past year. This is the only Mary A. Whelan, with mother Mary Whelan, that I, Robert G. Nooning Sr. have found in any other Census record other then the 1910 Census. The age for this Mary A Whelan, daughter, matches exactly with other records that I currently have as of 5-25-2007.

Per family history, the parents of James Francis Farrell Jr., were James Francis Farrell Sr., and Margaret Begley, both from County Waterford, Ireland.
The family story is that Thomas Wylam Taylor was adopted by the Wylam family but didn't find out about it until later in life after he was married and had children. He found out that his real surname was Taylor and changed the family name back to Taylor from Wylam between 1910 and 1916.
Census records do not match with the above family story. Data entered for Thomas Taylor and Mary Segalini family is from the 1900 Census in Houtzdale, PA, 1910, PA, 1920 Census in Wilkinsburg, PA, and 1930 Census in Pittsburgh, PA, 13th Ward, which may be Wilkinsburg as well. Thomas passed in 1929 so Mary Taylor is listed as head of household for the 1930 Census.
The Census records do not tell why the children, at least with Margaret S., has the birth certificate as Margaret Wylam, with parents Thomas and Mary Wylam. The baptism record names are the same for Margaret S.
Listed as a coal miner at age 11 in 1880 Census.
Year of immigration for Thomas Taylor was listed as 1881 in the 1900 Census of Thomas Taylor family. However, his father, John Taylor was 1868. Year of immigration for his mother Margaret and brother Robert was 1872 per the 1900 Census under John Taylor. Immigration of 1881 for Thomas is believed to be incorrect as he would have been 12 years old. It is believed that Thomas Taylor immigrated with his mother and brother in 1872.
The Taylor family plot is in Calvary Cemetery, it is ½ Lot 447 Section “S”. (From Catherine Zacher Lombardi to Robert G. Nooning Sr.)
Inez Mary Irene Segaline (Mae Segalini)
In the Segaline, Segalini family, there was Luigi, Mae, Thomas, John, and Camiel, who came from Italy. They may have come together, or at separate times. The various Census records for the family say that they were born in America, and Italy, depending on the Census year and the family involved. The last name of Segalini was generally changed by all family members found to Segaline. Camiel Segalini seems to be the exception, and kept his last name of Segalini.
Birth place from 1900 Census is PA, with parents from Italy.
Birth place from 1930 Census is confusing. Census say's PA for birth place for Mary, but son and daughter's mother's birth place as Italy.
Listed in family notes as May or Mae. Listed in Census records as Mary. Hand written note from 1926 has Inez M. Irene.
The family story is that her husband, Thomas Wylam Taylor, was adopted by the Wylam family but didn't find out about it until later in life after he was married and had children. I know there were some hard feelings when Irwin Sr. died and Kitty remarried (badly) in 2 or 3 months. I am sure my father kept in touch with Charles, but when I got married my father went into the hospital with heart failure on the Thursday before the wedding (he missed it and I was not allowed to visit), later my dad told me Charles said “well at least you don’t have to watch a Zacher marry an Italian, again” to which my dad replied “you moron that was my mother” and then he told him to leave.
That is how I know about the whole Italian/German thing. I will have to call my mom’s brother, he may know something, they were pretty close. Also from Catherine Zacher Lombardi to Robert G. Nooning Sr, 9-2007.
Kitty was a seamstress and quite a good one, she made all of our dress up clothes.
Killed in plane accident in the US during WW2 while serving in military. Death cert say's body was completely disintegrated.
