Malcolm Henry Nooning Jr.

Name is transcribed incorrectly for Malcolm Henry Nooning Sr. and family in the1920 Federal Census. On this same original copy of the 1920 Federal Census is William Wallace Nooning Sr. and wife Bessie. The following is the copy of the record: As luck would have it, MH Nooning Sr. and family lived next door to his father, WW Nooning and Bessie. Otherwise, this 1920 record would have been difficult to find.

Malcolm Henry Nooning Jr. was a Marine veteran and served in the Pacific. He was wounded in the arm on Okinawa and awarded the Purple Heart.

The Battle of Okinawa, fought on the Japanese island of Okinawa, was the largest amphibious assault during the Pacific campaigns of World War II. It lasted from late March through June 1945. The battle has been referred to as the "Typhoon of Steel" in English, and tetsu no ame ("rain of steel") or tetsu no bōfū ("violent wind of steel") in Japanese. The nicknames refer to the ferocity of the fighting, the intensity of gunfire involved, and sheer numbers of Allied ships and armored vehicles that assaulted the island.
Okinawa had a large civilian population, of whom at least 150,000 were killed during the battle, while the Japanese army attempted to defend the island. It is no wonder that Mal Nooning Jr. didn't talk about it very much. As a matter of fact, it was like pulling teeth to get anything about WW2 out of him.

A story about Okinawa is that a cave was taken and a large safe was inside. After blowing the safe, it was found to be packed with Japanese yen. The Marine's at the time believed that the yen would be worthless after the war and basically, gave most of it away. Mal Nooning Jr. kept a handful of bills. When Mal Nooning Jr. found out that the yen would be good as currency after the war, he sent the yen home to his mother and father. When Mal Jr. returned home from military service, he converted this money and it became the down payment for his first house. The income was not reported in a tax return and no taxes were paid on the money.

He worked for the PA Railroad for at least 10 years after the military and had a railroad pension. He was an independent salesman for the remainder of his life.

Malcolm Henry Nooning Jr. and Mary Antonina Groome's divorce was final on 12-5-1962. Mal Nooning Jr. remarried twice after the divorce from Mary Groome, and both ended in divorce. He remarried for a 3rd time to a Tina in Ft Laurderdale, FL and left her as a widow. These marriages are not reflected in the family tree as there were no additional children.

William Clair Groome

From Robert G. Nooning Sr., 7-4-2007
My grandfather, William Clair Groome, was somewhat of a mystery to me. On my visits to my grandmother, when he came home it was “time to go home now Bobby”, and I was ushered out the door. He never acknowledged me, never said hello or goodbye, and in my memory never spoke a word to me. I just figured that he didn’t like me. However, after speaking with Barbara Gene Groome Warner, in June of 2007, she had a similar story.

Barbara Gene relayed the story that she went to our grandmother Groome and said “I don’t think grandpa likes us”. Grandmother Lucy replied that he only showed affection to his immediate family, and not to others. It was nice to know after 50 years that it wasn’t just me. Maybe it was just Barbara Gene and I. :)

I remember his funeral well. I had never seen so many people and flowers. He was laid out in an ornamental gown that was, I believe, from the St. Vincent DePaul Society or the Knights of Columbus. He was, I believe, an official of both organizations and for a time, was the head of the St. Vincent DePaul Society in Pittsburgh, PA.

For a person that thought that nobody would show up at his funeral, he would have really been surprised. He was highly respected among his peers. My only wish is that I could have gotten to know him in my lifetime.

Note regarding the images of the WW2 draft cards for the states of PA, MD, VT, and DE. These four states were scanned at the National Archives facility in such a way that the back of one person’s draft card appears on the same image as the front of the next individual. The result is that when you click to view the original image, you will see the correct front side of the draft card, but the back of the previous soldier’s card. Ancestry is aware of this problem, and is working quickly to correct this issue.

Lucy Dorothy Farrell

From Robert G. Nooning Sr., 6-4-2007

Lucy Dorothy Farrell Groome was quite the character when I knew her. As a child of 6, 7, and 8 years old I used to walk over to her home, especially during early afternoon in the Summer. When I would arrive, she would drop everything and spend the afternoon with me.

Generally, we would play cards. She taught me most of the poker games that I know today, along with 500 rummy. I suspect that she left me win more often then I should have.

Then there were the days that she would show me the old family photographs, and the coin collection of my grandfather, William Clair Groome. I was never to tell grandpa Groome that she showed me his collection. That was a secret between us that I never broke. Many of the photos I now have in my collection, passed down via her daughter, my mother, Mary Antonina Groome Nooning Aiello. Lucy would tell me stories about her father and mother, as well as her brothers and sisters.

The story that sticks out the most in my mind is that Lucy told me that her mother was Alice Yingling. She explained that her grandmother, Mary Whelan, was widowed, and ran a boarding house in Clearfield County, Houtzdale, PA. She had Alice out of wedlock and she went by the name Alice Yingling. Lucy also explained that Alice had a very poor opinion of men in general all of her life as a result. Her mother, Alice Yingling, married John Francis Farrell. Her father John, was from County Waterford, Ireland. His parents, supposedly were John Francis Farrell Sr., and Margaret Begley, both from Ireland. It is unknown if the family came together or not. The 1900 Census record has 1872 as the immigration year for John Francis Farrell. He would have been age 15-17 at the time. In 1900 he answered the question Naturalized, as no.
(Note from William Clair Groome Jr., b. 6-1918 to Robert G. Nooning Sr., 12-16-2007. Am sure that my grandfather Farrell was born in Waterford County. My mother spoke often of this. Alice was the name of his wife--my grandmother. They did live in Philadelphia then moved to Houtzdale, PA).

Although the official family history seems to contradict the story of Alice, it is interesting that this family story was also told to other family members and passed down. Notably, from Barbara Gene Groome Warden. What we know for sure is that all official Census records, 1900 and 1910, lists her name as Mary or Mary A., not Alice. Her mother was definitely Mary A. Whelan AEB a letter to Mary from her mother signed Mary A. Whelan, dated September 29th, 1886. The A. in Mary’s name may have been Alice or Ann, she may have gone by Alice, but on official documents found so far she is listed as Mary or Mary A.

I have in the family tree what I believe are the parents of Mary A. Whelan Farrell. They are the 1860 and 1880 records. The entry has been made for the following reasons.
The John Francis Farrell family had a connection in the Philadelphia area. Their youngest child James, was born in Philadelphia and that’s where they lived in the 1900 Census. Delaware County, is located next to Philadelphia County. Located in Delaware County was a family with Martin Whelan, with the wife Mary, and a daughter Mary A. Whelan. This Mary A. Whelan matched the birth year and birth place of our Mary A. Whelan. There was nothing in the Census records in 1860, 1870, or 1880, that even came close to a match for this family in all of the United States.

Delaware County to Clearfield County, Houtzdale, PA, must have been quite a trip back in 1886. No cars, buses, etc. It would have been by horse and buggy to probably a train station. I will speculate that the letter of 1886, previously mentioned, was written out of respect and concern that she arrived back home safely. If Mary A. Whelan, the mother of Mary A. Whelan Farrell, lived in Houtzdale, Pa, where her daughter lived, there would be no need for a “arrived home safe” letter.

Well, Back to Lucy. On my visits to Lucy, she inevitably made me what she called a “black cow.” This consisted of vanilla ice cream with root beer. She also called it a root beer float, but mostly referred to it as a black cow.

I remember going to church once with my grandmother Lucy when I was about 8 years old. Once! It turned out to be the stations of the cross and lasted from 12pm to 3pm at Easter time at St. James Church in Wilkinsburg, PA. Boy, was I surprised. I thought it was going to just be a regular Mass. I was even more surprised when Lucy started to sing. If you have ever been to church, and heard one voice over all of the others loud and clear, that was my grandmother Lucy. I don’t think that Lucy ever hit so much as one note the entire time, but it didn’t phase her a bit. She liked to sing, so by God she sang her lungs out. The fact that the immediately surrounding people backed away, and the other people were staring, didn’t bother her one single bit. As a child of 8, I couldn’t appreciate at the time the implications for her unique personality, and what made Lucy, Lucy. I just wanted to melt away. I was horrified and embarrassed beyond belief. Looking back on it, I wish now that I could have appreciated it more and had a good time with it. Barbara Gene Groome Warner had the same experience.

I have two stories about when Lucy moved to Florida. The first is her teeth. Apparently, her false teeth had been bothering her for some time. Finally, while stuck in traffic over the Peace River, between Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte, she got out of the car, took out her teeth, and chucked them into the Peace River. She supposedly remarked, “Well, I guess I have to get a new set of teeth now”.

The second story is when she first moved to Florida. She noticed 3 people crossing her lawn. She opened the window and hollered out to the total strangers, “do you need a forth for bridge”? As it turned out, they did! So started the social life of Lucy Farrell Groome in Florida.

Lucy Dorothy Farrell Groome was a great lady. She was full of life and an extrovert. She had a great influence on me as a child. I loved her very much. My greatest regret is that I was not informed about her passing and burial until after the fact. I can tell everyone that I was a little more then upset. I would have jumped through hoops to do whatever I could have done to be there to pay my last respects. I would have been there had I known.

Lucy Dorothy Farrell Groome remarried Lyle Wilson at I believe, age 80. She passed as Lucy D. Wilson.

1900 Census, Philadelphia, PA, name spelled Farell, instead of Farrell, and Lucy as Louisa.
Mary had 8 children, 7 living. The hard to read name is believed to be Patrick.

Lucy in 1930 Federal Census with William C. Groome is listed as Lugay Groome instead of Lucy. There was a penmanship error on the original 1930 Census with her name, and this error was later transcribed as Lugay Groome instead of Lucy Groome. After looking at the original Census record, it is clear how the mistake was made.

Also in the 1930 Census, Lucy listed her fathers birthplace as the Irish Free State.

Lucy Dorothy Farrell Groome had an Uncle Charles and Aunt Tillie. It is unknown if it was the Farrell or Groome side.

Lucy Groome

This child, Lucy Groome, appears only on the 1920 Census record at 1 month old. It is assumed by Robert G. Nooning Sr., that this child, previously unknown to exist, passed very young. Death date is unknown.

John Philip Groom (Groome)

The middle name "Philip" from Barbara Gene Groome Warden.
John Phillip Goome was listed in the 1870 and 1880 Census as Groom. He was also listed in the Cambria County Marriage Index as Groom for the following marriage record.
54-1 1888 GROOM, John P. GRIMES, Jennie H. 5-375
The 1910 and 1920 Census of John P. Groome was spelled as Groome.

Note from John E. Groome that John P. Groome was born 11-26-1859 in Hollidaysburg, Blair County, PA, and died 5-12-1926. The actual birth date is Nov 27, 1860 per Catholic Vital Records of Central Pennsylvania.

The 1880 Census record states age 20. If his birth month was November, and born in 1859, the 1880 Census would match John E. Groome's birth date for him at age 20. The Census records record "age at last birthday", and the 1880 Census was taken on June 15, 1880.

The 1900 Census record states Nov, 1861, as the birth date.

The 1910 Census states age 50, in June, 1910, which would make his birth year as 1859 if the "age at last birthday" was followed, and if he was born in November.

The1920 Census, taken January 12, 1920, has him at age 59, which would make his birth year as 1861. However, if "age at last birth day" was followed, the birth year would be 1860.

Birth year originally from 1900 Census. Birth year listed is from the Catholic Vital Records of Central Pennsylvania, 1793-1869.

1900 and 1910 Census also had Annie Finnegan and Margaret Glesson living with them. The 1920 Census had Annie Finnegan living with them. Margaret had passed between 1910 and 1920. Annie Finnegan is listed in the 1930 Census with William C. Groome and Lucy D. Farrell.

The following information as told to Robert G. Nooning Sr. came from John E. Groome at his home in Harrisburg, PA around 1981. John E. Groome's father, John P. Groome, had brother Walter, George and Michael, sisters Helen and Ella.

Robert G. Nooning Sr was told by John E. Groome, that John P. Groome was born in Blair County, Hollidaysburg, PA, and raised in an orphanage. Also in that orphanage was Jennie Hannah Grimes and friend Annie Finnegan. They were then raised by the Glesson family, Cambria County, Ashville, PA.

1880 Census record, Portage, Canbria County, PA verified the information that John P. Groom was living with the Glesson's at age 20.

Listed under Jerry Glesson, age 65 family in 1880 Census:
John P. Groom age 20
Hannah Grimes age 13
Annie E. Finnegan age 28

The 1870 Census, with the Glesson's, had Hannah Grimes at age 3 and Annie Finnegan, age 21. John P. Groome was not listed with the Glesson's in the 1870 Census. He was on the 1870 Census with his mother and father.

John P. Groom's mother may have passed abt 1870 after the Census or 1871. I, Robert G. Nooning Sr., believe that John P. Groom moved in with the Glesson's between 1871 and 1880 after his mother passed, and his father remarried Maria Brophy abt 1871 or 1872. His brother George Groom moved in with his uncle, John Riley. His half brother Michael, and half sister Ella B. Groom were listed with Maria (Mary) Brophy Groom.

Jennie Hannah Grimes

Birth date from baptism record. 1870 Census birth place is PA.

1900 Census Cambria County, Portage, PA, under John Groome-birth place is PA. Father's birth place is Ireland. Mother's birth place is PA. 1900 Census also had Annie Finnegan and Margaret Glesson living with John P. Groome and Hannah Grimes family.

The following information as told to Robert G. Nooning Sr. came from John E. Groome at his home in Harrisburg, PA around 1981. Jennie Hannah Grimes had brothers James, Gus, and sister Sally who married a Reinart or Reinhart. John P. Groome was born in Blair County, Hollidaysburg, PA, and raised in an orphanage. Also in that orphanage was Jennie Hannah Grimes and friend Annie Finnegan. They were then raised by the Glesson family, Cambria County, Ashville, PA.

The above family story has been verified AEB the 1870 and 1880 Census records. Jennie Hannah Grimes was found living with the Glesson's, in Cambria County, Summerhill, PA, at age 3 in the 1870 Census. She is also found living with the same Glesson's in the 1880 Census at age 13 in Portage, Cambria County, PA. However, she was not an orphan. Her mother, Sarah Riley Groom passed and the younger children were farmed out to other families. Her father, Francis Grimes, remarried Bridget Travis, 30 years younger then husband Francis, and had 4 additional children. Francis Grimes passed in 1886. Please see the following letter from a professional researcher on the Grimes family.

Listed under Jerimiah Glesson in the 1870 Census, Cambria County, Summerhill, PA,.
Hannah Grimes age 3
Annie Finnegan age 21

Listed under Jerry Glesson, age 65 family in 1880 Census,Cambria County, Portage, PA.
John P. Groom age 20
Hannah Grimes age 13
Annie E. Finnegan age 28

Cambria County Marriage Index had the spelling of Groome as Groom for the following marriage record.
54-1 1888 GROOM, John P. GRIMES, Jennie H. 5-375

1910 Census for Jennie Hannah Grimes Groome said she had 6 children, 5 living. Son George passed at age 16 or 17 per John E. Groome so this is accurate. Son Robert Groome was born after the 1910 Census, but the 1920 Census has him at age 11.
Jennie Hannah Grimes Groome would have had 7 children, 5 living in 1920. In the 1920 Census, Rose would have passed and she is not listed.

Dear Mr. Nooning,

Regarding your recent Research Request for information on Jennie Hannah Grimes:

1. The marriage license application for Jennie H. Grimes and John P. Groom states that Francis Grimes is Jennie's parent. Marriage took place at Wilmore, PA. Copy of marriage application is enclosed.

2. With above information, I checked the 1860 Census and found Francis Grimes (age 42) living in Summerhill Township. He was a farmer, born in Ireland, married to Susan (age 23) born in PA. Also in household: Mary J. (3), Elizabeth C. (2), Matilda A. (5 mo), and Francis Grimes (16), farm laborer. Copy enclosed.

3. Because Jennie Hannah and John were married in Wilmore, and that is a Catholic area, I consulted Catholic Vital Records of Central Pennsylvania, a five volume set of books containing Catholic record transcriptions from 1793-1869. First, I found the 1867 birth of Hannah Grimes, confirming that Francis Grimes and Susan Crum were her parents. I then checked for other children of Francis and Susan. Most of these entries use the Latin forms of names. An explanation is enclosed. Marriage record of Francis Grimes and Susan Crum also included. In addition, I found a birth record for Susan Crum and a marriage record for her parents. All are included.

4. 1870 Census Summerhill Township shows Francis Grimes with same children from 1860 but no wife, Susan. Copy enclosed. My guess is that she died, although I found no record to confirm that.

5. 1880 Census White Township shows Francis Grimes married to Bridget. 17 year old son named Augustus. This is probably son Daniel A. who was named in 1870 Census. Copy enclosed.

6. 1886 obituary for Francis Grimes and reading of St. Augustine Cemetery showing burial of Francis Grimes. Copies enclosed.

7. You mentioned that Hannah had a sister Sally and the baptismal records show a sister Sarah. I found Sarah in the 1870 Census, Croyle Township. Copy enclosed.

8. 1880 Census, Croyle Township, listing for Sady (Sally or Sarah) Grimes.
As you can see, it does not appear that Hannah was orphaned. Rather my guess is that her mother died and the younger children were "farmed out." Her father appears to have remarried (probably around 1871, by age of daughter Bridget in 1880 Census). I hope you find this information helpful. I may be able to find more information on Hannah's family given more time.

George H. Groome

Birth year from 1900 Census.

George was not mentioned as a brother when told to Robert G. Nooning Sr. by John E. Groome in 1981. However, George is listed in the 1900 Census as a son to John P. and Hannah Groome. Date of death is unknown and he could have died young. If this is the case, John E. Groome may not have known about him.

The Groome brothes were always referred to as the 4 Groome brothers, Walter, William, John and James. It is believed by Robert G. Nooning Sr., that both sons, Robert and George, may have passed at a young age.

Rose Groome

Died at age 16.

From Barbara Gene Groome Warner: Rose died from blood poisoning. The basketball team she was on had black socks. The dye in these black socks caused the blood poisoning.

Robert Groome

Robert Groome may have passed at a young age as no further data has been found by Robert G. Nooning Sr. Also, his older brother James Francis Groome named a son Robert J. Groome. This may have been to honor his deceased younger brother. This information is speculation on Robert G. Nooning's part as of 6-8-2007.

The Groome brothes were always referred to as the 4 Groome brothers, Walter, William, John and James. It is believed by Robert G. Nooning Sr. that both sons, Robert and George, may have passed at a young age.

John E. Groome

John and Catherine had no children

The following information as told to Robert G. Nooning Sr. came from John E. Groome and Mary Catherine Hoover Groome at their home in Harrisburg, PA around 1981.

John E. Groome's father, John P. Groome, had brothers Walter, George and Michael, sisters Helen and Ella. John P. was born in Blair County, Hollidaysburg, Pa November 26, 1859, and died 12 May 1926.

Michael-Killed on the PA railroad as a brakeman

Ella-Married Ed Burns-Son's Herbert and Edward (Confirmed)

Jennie Hannah Grimes had brothers James, Gus, and sister Sally who married a Reinart or Reinhart.

Robert G. Nooning Sr. was told that John P. Groome was born in Blair County, Hollidaysburg, PA, and raised in an orphanage. Also in that orphanage was Jennie Hanna Grimes and friend Annie Finnegan. They were then raised by the Glesson family, Cambria County, Ashville, PA. Census record verified this information. See individual sources for John P. Groom (name in Census as Groom, not Groome)

In researching historical records on 5-23-2007, I, Robert G. Nooning Sr. came across newspaper articles from 2 sources in PA. They were about John C. Groome Sr. and John C. Groome Jr. My memory is that John E. Groome told me, Robert G. Nooning Sr., that John C. Groome Sr. was a distant uncle or cousin, and that he helped start the PA State Police. These articles confirm the information about the PA State Police. The location of the newspaper articles was Ancestry.com, PA search, Census records. Under all of the records is The Clearfield County newspaper and The Indiana Evening Gazette. Their records span many years and a search under Groome produced many records.

In addition to the above paragraph, I, Robert G. Nooning Sr. also remember John E. Groome telling me that the family story is that 2 Groome brothers came to America. One settled in PA and 1 in VA. The coming of the Groome brothers was somewhat prior to the American Civil War, and John E. Groome explained that it was a case of brother against brother during the war.

On a personal note, John E. Groome and Mary Catherine Hoover Groome were remarkable people. Mary and John at the time were both self sufficient and mobile. They were both mentally alert, competent, and as "sharp as a tack." I also found out where the tradition of putting mayonnaise on a salad came from at dinner time, and it reminded me of when I was a child and we did the same.

They were too old to drive when I, Robert G Nooning Sr, met them. However, John E. Groome had purchased, and was using, a Commodore 64 computer with a modem. He used this to communicate with friends.

Mary Catherine Hoover

On a personal note, John E. Groome and Mary Catherine Hoover Groome were remarkable people. Mary and John at the time were both self sufficient and mobile. They were both mentally alert, competent, and as "sharp as a tack." I also found out where the tradition of putting mayonnaise on a salad came from at dinner time, and it reminded me of when I was a child and we did the same.

They were too old to drive when I, Robert G Nooning Sr, met them. Their poor car was still in the garage with 4 flat tires and rusting away. However, John E. Groome had purchased, and was using, a Commodore 64 computer with a modem. He used this to communicate with friends. This is a considerable feat considering the people that are still illiterate about computers as of 2007.

Catherine and John had no children. This was due to an operation that Catherine had many years before. As they both explained it, a complication came up during the operation that required a complete hysterectomy. I, Robert G. Nooning Sr., think they would have been wonderful parents.

Mary Catherine lived to be 100 years old. Good for her.

John Groom Jr.

The last name listed in the Catholic Vital Records of Central Pennsylvania was spelled as Grom instead of Groom for the birth of John Groom, born in 1834 to John Groom and Catherine Albert. The 1850 Census record has the correct spelling of Groom.

The name John Groom was placed on the marriage application as the father of John P. Groom for the 1888 marriage to Jennie Hannah Grimes. The marriage application is in the scrapbook.

George-Drove first train through McAdoo Tunnel in New York. Picture with gov of NY (Confirmed)
Michael-Killed on the PA railroad as a brakeman
Helen-Mother Superior, Sisters of Charity, Butler, PA
Ella-Married Ed Burns-Son's Herbert and Edward. (Confirmed)
Jennie Hannah Grimes had brothers James, Gus, and sister Sally who married a Reinart or Reinhart.

It is Robert G. Nooning's belief as of 7-20-2007, that John Groom was married twice. The first marriage was to Sarah Riley AEB the Census records, and the Catholic Vital Records of Central Pennsylvania, 1793-1869. They had children John P., Mary Helen, and George Groom. I believe that Sarah Riley passed between 1870 and 1871. I believe that John Groom remarried Maria Brophy abt 1872. I also believe that John Grome passed before the 1880 Census, and Maria Brophy Groom was back with her parents with Ella Bridget and Michael Groom. They are listed as grandchildren to Michael and Mary Brophy. Walter Groom, mentioned as a child from John E. Groome, is not seen in any of the Census records. However, John E. Groome's information has been very accurate so he has been included with the marriage to Maria Brophy.

The 1870 Census record, Blair County, Gaysport, PA that has the following listed:
John Groom 40 Ireland Brakeman, PA Railroad.
Sarah Riley 22 Ireland Keeping House
John Riley 10 Ireland At Home
Mary Riley 8 PA At Home
George Riley 6 PA At Home
Philip Riley 80 PA At Home
Edward Riley 24 PA At Home
Sarah Riley 70 PA At Home

There were 2 Sarah Riley’s in this household. I believe that the Census taker made mistakes on names, ages, birth places and who was with who, and the family should be listed as:
1870 Census record, Blair County, Gaysport, PA
John Groom 40 PA Brakeman, PA Railroad.
Sarah Groom 32 Ireland Keeping House (I believe the age should be 32, not 22)
John Groom 10 Ireland At Home
Mary Groom 8 PA At Home
George Groom 6 PA At Home
Philip Riley 80 PA At Home Father-In-Law
(Age in 1880 Census also 80. Age should be 70. Birth place should be Ireland)
Sarah Riley 70 PA At Home Mother-In-Law (Birth place should be Ireland)
Edward Riley 24 PA At Home Brother-In-Law

The above corrected Census information is confirmed by the Catholic Vital Records of Central Pennsylvania, 1793-1869. In the hands of Robert G. Nooning Sr., is the marriage names and date for John Groom and Sarah Johanna Riely. Also in hand is the birth and baptism dates of John Groom and children John P., Mary E., and George Groom.

All of the Census records for the last name spelling as Riley. The Catholic Vital Records have the spelling as Riely. Reason is still unknown. The spelling as Riely is used in the marriage record, and the birth records of John P,, Mary E., and George Groom (Groome). There is no middle initial or middle name listed in the baptism record of George Groom.

In the 1870 Census, John Groom was listed as a brakeman on the PA Railroad. Michael was supposed to have been killed as a brakeman on the PA Railroad and George worked on the railroad as well.

The 1880 Census of the Riley’s in Blair County, Gaysport, PA, has listed with them George Groom, age 15. It also has the Edward Riley and Philip Riley from the 1870 John Groom Census. John Groom, Sarah Groom, and Sarah Riley are not found in the 1880 Census in Blair County with the Riley's. This would make sense if both the wife Sarah and mother in law of John Groom died between 1864 and 1880, and John Groom remarried Maria Brophy.

Notes from Robert G. Nooning Sr:
Many times in the Census records, the person's proper name was listed, not the name they were commonly known. Other times, the opposite was true.
Ella B's middle name may have been Bridget, and listed in a Census as Bridget.

I, Robert G. Nooning Sr., remember as a young child of 5 or 6 that James Walter Groome Sr. came to live with our family for a brief period of time. He lived in our basement. This man, taught me how to tell time with the big round watch on a chain that he had. My age at the time was 5 or 6 tears old. I thought "Jimmy" was a great guy and I liked him. He was always friendly and welcomed you with a smile. How or why he came to live with us is unknown to me, He was my mother's cousin.

THIS RECORD IS NOT VERIFIED FOR THIS INDIVIDUAL AS A SPOUSE TO JAMES WALTER GROOME BY ME, ROBERT G. NOONING SR. However, all other Groome's are accounted for and there seems to be little possibility of her being anyone else, except for it being another name for Jean Arrigo, married to Robert Groome.
