Nooning Family Tree

Notes

Thomas A. Nooning

In the 1850 Census, M-432, R-572, SH-447-448, Ontario County, Seneca, New York, there is a listing for a Cornelius Nooning with the wife of Ellan. Both born in Ireland. There were 4 children listed as follows:

Michael 1838
Thomas 1840
John 1832
Julia 1836

I, Robert G. Nooning Sr., believe that Cornelius Nooning with the wife of Ellan are the parents of Thomas A. Nooning. It has not been positively verified. I also believe that the Census record was incorrect on the birthdates of Michael and Thomas and that they were reversed. The normal procedure was to list the children in the order by age. For this family, the children's ages were listed in the order of 12, 10, 18, 16.

Copy of the original 1850 Census is attached with Cornelius Nooning. It is 2 pages. The bottom of the first page has Cornelius and Ellan Mooning instead of Nooning. The top of the next page has the 4 children as Nooning. The original copy of the Census is clearly Nooning, not Mooning.

The official records of Thomas A Nooning would cause him to be born in 1838. Some of the following records that I have found so far on Thomas A. Nooning to support this are as follows:

1) Death certificate-Bureau of Health, register of deaths in the City of Troy, County of Rensselaer, State of New York::
Thomas A. Nooning Age 72 years
Date of death 2-13-1910
Registered number 39535
Place of death Marshall Sanitarium
Married Yes- Married by Elder Coon in a Baptist Church March 21, 1859
Occupation Policeman
Birth Place New York
Cause of death Obstructive jaundice due to impacted gallstone

2) Civil War Pension application, affidavits, pension number 505049 records.

3) Civil War military records-New York 125th Infantry, Troy, NY. Enlisted Aug 10, 1862, mustered in Aug 27, 1862, mustered out June 5, 1865

All records indicate that he was born in New York. In addition, the records indicate that Thomas A. Nooning's parents were born in Ireland. As mentioned above, in the 1850 Census Cornelius and Ellan were both from Ireland.

There is another record in the 1850 Census of Berlin, Rensselaer, New York, (Troy) a Thomas Nooning, age 15, born in NY, living with the Hull family (Maria 48, Nancy 16, hard to read). Thomas's daughter later married a George Hull. This may or may not be a connection. He would have been age 12, not 15, and he could have been visiting there at the time the Census taker made his rounds. The parents, Cornelius and Ellan, would have included him in their family for the 1850 Census as well.

Cornelius was located in the 1820 Federal Census records in Windham, NY which is located just outside of Albany and Troy, NY where most of the Nooning's were located.

The only curious thing that I, Robert G. Nooning Sr., see that would lead me to not believe that Cornelius Nooning was his father is that the name of Cornelius and Ellan (Ellen) is not given to any of his descendants. But then, neither was the name Thomas or Orcelia given to the children or grandchildren.

1880 Census T-765, R-125, V-83, ED-131, SH-12, Troy, New York (Family of Thomas Nooning and Orcelia Stone) Thomas actually is not present on the 1880 Census record. However, there is enough other positive identification to prove that he was the husband of Orcelia M. Stone, and the father of the children. Also, Thomas may have lived and/or worked for a time in New York City AEB his original enlistment found as 1st Zouaves April 20, 1861, NYC, reeinlisted August 27, 1862 in the NY 125th.

1880 Census record, Rennselaer, County, Troy, NY, has the last name of Nooning as Newning. Listed under Orcelia Newning as head. The children are also listed with Orcelia in the 1880 Census. Also in the 1880 Census for the County of Kane, Elgin, IL in the Illinois Hospital for the Insane, is a listing for Thomas A. Nooning, born in New York, and a farmer. This may be our Thomas A. Nooning AEB his not being listed in any other Census record with wife Orcelia, and the explanation for 1 Census record for daughter May Margaret (Mertie) Nooning being born in Illinois. However, he is also listed as a resident there in the 1860 Census as well. Considering that he married Orcelia in 1859, joined and served in the military during the Civil War, and was a policeman in Troy, NY, this is more then likely not our Thomas A. Nooning.

Prior to the Civil War, he was a farmer (Military muster record). In addition, he had red hair, blue eyes, sandy complexion (Military muster and pension application records). During the Civil war, he was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg (Civil War records) After the Civil War, he was a policeman in Troy, NY (on death certificate) and in the Troy, NY Police Records "The History of the Police Department of Troy, N.Y. from 1786 to 1902" Page 35, 41 as

He was a member of the 2nd Presbyterian Church, Troy, NY. His funeral home was Robert Morris Funeral Home, 2174 5th Avenue, Troy, NY, in 1910.

If by chance sometime in the future it is found that Cornelius and Ellan Nooning are not the parents of Thomas A. Nooning, there may be a connection in Mass. Research has shown the Nooning name in Mass and VT, with a Thomas Nooning being a Revolutionary War soldier. Also, Agnes Virginia Vallee, born 22 Dec 1919, in a personal letter to Robert G. Nooning Sr., stated that she remembered visiting some Nooning's as a child in Mass.

Orcelia M. Stone

Samuel 15 m child Rens 15 farmer
Edmond B. 13 m child Rens 13 (Edgar)
Mary A. 11 f child Rens 11
Franklin J. 4 m child Rens 4

The 1860 Census record of Henry W. Stone in Rennselaer County, Berlin, NY, has the birth dates of the children incorrectly listed. Orcelia, Mary, and Edgar's birth date have been proven incorrect AEB other Census records. The birth date for her sister Mary is incorrect AEB the 1920 Census of Martha Nooning Hull. Edgar's birth date was off AEB the 1900 Census of the Edgar Stone family in Westerlo, NY. The 1870 Census of Henry W. Stone is accurate.

In addition, the circumstantial evidence is strong enough to enter this family into the Nooning Family Tree. She was born in NY, mother born in NY according to all Census records. The father's birth place in the 1860 Census is VT. The 1880 Census for Orcelia said it was NY. The 1910 Census for Orcelia said he was from England. The birth place listed for the father from the Census records from Mary and Edgar all say the birth place of the father was NY.

The family names given to Orcelia's children seem to come from her family-Orcelia's mother's name was Martha, she named a daughter Martha. Orcelia's father's name was Henry W. If the W was for Wallace or William she named a son William Wallace. William Wallace Nooning, son of Orcelia, named his son Malcolm Henry. Orcelia's brother was Edgar, she named a son Edgar. Orcelia had a sister Mary, she named a daughter May Margaret. There is also a Mary A. Clark, age 71. living with Orcelia's daughter, Martha A. Nooning Hull in the 1910 Census, Rennselaer County, Troy, NY. She is listed as an aunt. As mentioned above, Orcelia had a sister Mary and she would have been Martha's aunt..

Last but not least, the Stone family was from Rennselaer County, Berlin, NY. That is exactly where Orcelia M. Stone and Thomas A. Nooning were married on March 21, 1859, according to the pension application. Since Thomas A. Nooning was a farm laborer, she very well could have lived with her parents at the time of the 1860 Census while he was away. The Census taker recorded the data on June 16, 1860. Thomas would have been working on a farm at this time for planting season. He was a farmer prior to The Civil War. Thomas A. Nooning and Orcelia were married by Rev. Elder Coon, who, by the way, lived next door to the Stone family in the 1860 Census.

1880 Census T-765, R-125, V-83, ED-131, SH-12, Troy, New York
1880 Census record-Birthplace of NY-Last name and age incorrect on 1880 Census. The last name is spelled Newning, and the age of 56. The children are listed correctly so this is Orcelia Nooning. Many hand written records in Robert G. Nooning's possession, and attached as records, to prove birth date as 1842. The age marked as 56 is incorrect, she was 46. Lived at 24 8th Street, Troy, NY, Ward 2. Considering the fact that if she was 56, she would have had a child, Mertie, at age 52. This is very unlikely.

Cornelius Nooning

Located in the 1820 Federal Census records in Windham, NY which is located outside of Albany and Troy, NY. Not verified as same person but the birth date year matched.

Year of birth calculated from age given in 1850 Census.
1850 Census, M-432, R-572, SH-447-448, Ontario County, Seneca, New York,
There may have been more children in this marriage but it has not been researched.

Soundex system value of Census records for Nooning is N552

Cornelius and Ellan are listed on the bottom of sheet 447, and the children are listed on the top of the next page, 448. The attached Census record is the original copy from 1850.

The transcribed version of the 1850 Census has Cornelius spelled wrong, and with the last name of Mooning instead of Nooning. It also has the children on the next sheet spelled correctly, as Nooning. The transcription service for the original Census records to a transcribed version was farmed out to India. There are many errors in these transcribed versions AEB other Census records. They were simply not as familiar with the English common names and mistakes, based sometimes on sloppy handwriting from the Census takers, were made.

As yet to be positively confirmed as the father of Thomas A. Nooning as of 5-10-2007.

George B. Hull

1900 Census believed to have Martha and George Hull ages reversed. Martha A. Nooning would be 30 and George would be 27. Information is not positively verified.

Malcolm H. Nooning Jr. was the source of a lot of the old family history. His grandfather, William Wallace Sr. lived with him when MH Nooning Jr. was a teenager. Martha A. and May Margaret would have been William's siblings, and MH Nooning Jr’ s great aunts. His memory included Martha A. being married to a Courtland Hull, and May Margaret being married to a Bellamy. On Courtland Hull, it is Martha's son's middle name and what he went by in the 1920 Census. He is listed there as G. Courtland Hull.

This Martha A. Nooning being married to this George B. Hull was cross verified via the Hull Family Tree in One World Tree on Ancestry.com. Their data was that George B. Hull was born 1865 in Hancock, MA. The 1900 Census has Jan, 1870. Their data also listed as the son Guerdon C. Hull instead of George Courtland Hull, and there was no mention of the son Charles. Charles is in the 1900, 1910, and 1920 Census.

Martha A. Nooning

1900 Census believed to have Martha and George B. Hull ages reversed. Martha A. Nooning would be 30 and George would be 27.

1910 Census has Martha's age incorrect, and son Charles middle initial as R, not B. The 1900 Census could have mistaken a B for an R. The R is very clear in the 1910 Census.

Malcolm H. Nooning Jr. was the source of a lot of the old family history. His grandfather, William Wallace Sr. lived with him when MH Nooning Jr. was a teenager. Martha A. and May Margaret would have been William's siblings, and MH Nooning Jr’ s great aunts. This Martha A. Nooning being married to this George B. Hull was cross verified via the Hull Family Tree in One World Tree on Ancestry.com.

Martha A. Nooning Hull was born in 1870. This date is verified by the 1880 Census record, and documents by Orcelia Nooning's own hand. Although the 1910 and 1900 Census records attached as citations are the same person with the same children, the age's for Martha A. are different. The 1900 Census had her at age 27 instead of 30, the 1910 Census has her at age 34 instead of 40, The 1920 Census has her age at 43 instead of 50. Something is missing. Was there a little white lie going on here with Martha's age?

The son George C. Hull started going by his middle name Courtland on the 1918 WW1 draft card, and in the 1920 Census. There is also listed a Mary A. Clark, age 71. She is listed as an aunt. Martha's mother Orcelia had a sister named Mary and this would have been her aunt.

Charles R. (B) Hull

Malcolm H. Nooning Jr. was the source of a lot of the old family history. His grandfather, William Wallace Sr. lived with him when MH Nooning Jr. was a teenager. Martha A. and May Margaret would have been William's siblings, and MH Nooning Jr’ s great aunts. 1910 Census Charles middle initial as R, not B. The 1900 Census could have mistaken a B for an R during transcription. The R is very clear in the 1910 Census. The WW1 draft card has him signing his name Charles Bills Knight Hull.

1918 WW1 draft card has birth date of Oct 10, 1897. Mother listed as Mrs. M. A. Hull, which would be Martha A. Nooning Hull. This birth date conflicts with the 1900, 1910, and 1920 Census records. Charles would not be the first to lie about his age to enter the military. It is unknown if he was in the military.

William Wallace Nooning Sr.

William Wallace may have been born September 3, 1865 or 1866. In his mother's own hand, Orcelia M. Nooning, on the 1898 pension application, the date was Sept, 1866. On the 1900 Census, William Wallace Nooning Sr's birth date is Sept, 1865.

The following records are from a personal letter from Gettrude Wheeler, of Troy, New York to Robert G. Nooning Sr. in 1983. This letter contained death records from the Oakwood Cemetery in Troy, New York. Some of the information was inaccurate, as it also had NOONING MALCOM HENRY SR. 1968 and NOONING MARGARET SEBASTIAN 1985 being listed there. This is incorrect. They are buried at Sec U All Saints Braddock Catholic Cemetery in Pittsburgh, PA.

The following is not absolutely verified at Oakwood Cemetery.

The family story from Nikki Gillespie, Elizabeth Eaton and Catherine Nooning is that William Wallace Nooning Sr., was a Presbyterian minister or Elder. The story tells of him taking his grandson Edgar Arthur Nooning Jr., as a child, to church and preaching a "Hell Fire and Brimstone Damnation" sermon in Pittsburgh, PA, at a predominantly African American church.

What is known is that his father, Thomas A. Nooning, was a member of the 2nd Presbyterian Church in Troy, NY. What is also known is William Wallace Nooning Sr. was a member, and a delegate from, the Faith Presbyterian Church in Baltimore, MD, AEB church medals at 2 conventions, and 1 medal from the Sunday school between 1900 and 1910. In 1910, William Wallace Nooning was a member of a Presbyterian church in Chambersburg, PA. I, Robert G. Nooning Sr., stopped into the Presbyterian church abt 1983 in Chambersburg, PA, but was unable to obtain any old records due to time constraints on myself, and the church employee at the time. The church records were in boxes in the basement and I had not made a prior appointment. I was in Chambersburg on business for the day. The name of the church escapes me, but I, Robert G. Nooning Sr., did have the church name at the time and certify this information to be true.

Death in 1939-Malcolm Henry Nooning Jr. relayed the story to Robert G. Nooning Sr. that his grandfather, William Wallace Nooning Sr, was accidentally knocked down by the family dog and injured. He subsequently developed complications as a result and passed away. A newspaper article, in hand, confirms that story. See scrapbook.

Bessie B. Hagadorn

Bess's last name has been seen as Hagedorn and Hagadorn in documents and family records. The absolute spelling has not been verified. The majority of this last name in the Troy, New York area was Hagadorn. The different spelling variations I have seen are Hegedorn, Hegadorn, Hegedon, Hagadorn, and Hagedorn.

Bessie B. had a sister Florence that was a twin according to Malcolm H. Nooning Jr. It is fact that she did have a sister Florence, but the twin portion has not been verified.

There is a listing in the 1880 Census, Rensselaer County, Troy, NY for the following:
Sally Hagadorn 74
Daniel Hagadorn 49
Mary C. Hagadorn 31
Chester D. Hagadorn 10
Florena A. Hagadorn 8
Is this Florence with Bessie for some reason left off? Unknown as of 5-20-2007.

There is also a listing in the 1880 Census, Rensselaer County, Troy, NY for the following 2 female children in an orphanage.
Jessie Hagadorn age 7
Elizabeth Hagadorn age 7
Is this Florence, (was her name Elizabeth Frorence?) with Jessie (should it have been Bessie?), both age 7. Unknown as of 5-20-2007 if they were sisters, or both Hagadorns and unrelated. There were many children in this orphanage.

Robert G. Nooning Sr is going with Daniel and Mary Hagadorn as the parents of Bessie B. and Florence Hagadorn as of 5-20-2007. It still has to be cross verified.

Found on-line- Bessie Hegedorn </owt/person.aspx?pid=162826994> This information was entered into a Nooning family tree following the Edgar Arthur Nooning Jr. and Sr. line. Source is unknown. Born: 19 Feb 1873 in Holland Died: 19 Feb 1935 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania, USA
Information in this tree is inaccurate as it lists Thomas A. Nooning as being born in Ireland. He was absolutely proven to have been born in NY. His parents were from Ireland. Also, the 1900 and 1920 Federal Census Record has Bessie as being born in NY, and her parents were born in NY. The spelling of Hegedorn does not match any records that I, Robert G. Nooning Sr., have.

1930 Federal Census Record of William Wallace Nooning Jr. and Elizabeth Amstone Thomas Nooning list William's mother's (Bessie B) birthplace as Illinois. All other Census records and documents relating to Bess are that she was born in NY.

Old research from 1983 has for the 1900 Census "Bessie is said to have had 5 children, 3 of which were living". In the scrapbook of Bessie B. Hagadorn Nooning is a picture of Bessie, a little girl holding her hand, and an unknown older female. This may be William Wallace Nooning Sr. and Bessie's daughter that passed away before the 1900 Census. She would have been born probably in Rennselaer County, Troy, NY. The name is unknown as of 6-3-2007.

Jeanette A. Burr

Jeanette A. Burr may have been related somehow to the Nooning family. It is unknown and not researched by Robert G. Nooning Sr.

Her last name was Burr, not Burn, as the transcribed version of the 1920 Census has it. She was living with the William Wallace Sr. family in 1920 at age 10, and raised to adulthood. It is not believed as of 6-3-2007 that she was legally adopted by William Wallace Nooning Sr.

Malcolm Henry Nooning Jr. related stories about his childhood and knowing Jeanette A. Burr very well.

Note regarding the images of the WW2 draft cards for the states of PA, MD, VT, and DE. These four states were scanned at the National Archives facility in such a way that the back of one person’s draft card appears on the same image as the front of the next individual. The result is that when you click to view the original image, you will see the correct front side of the draft card, but the back of the previous soldier’s card. Ancestry is aware of this problem, and is working quickly to correct this issue.

MH Nooning Sr. was a drinker, possibly an alcoholic. MH Nooning Jr., relayed stories about his mother dragging him around to different bars looking for him. He later quit drinking (unknown when) ) and was sober for the rest of his life. MH Nooning Sr. was not a drinker in Robert G. Nooning Sr's memory.

MH Nooning Sr. never converted to the Catholic religion, but drove his wife Margaret to church on Sundays, and would read the paper in the car while she was at Mass.

He was known as Bupie to his grandchildren, and came over every Saturday morning in Robert G. Nooning Sr's memory and gave an allowance. The allowance for Robert Sr. at the time was 25 cents a week. 25 cents could buy 5 full size candy bars at the time!

Margaret Sebastian Wylam Taylor

Born as Margaret Sebastian Wylam, baptized as Margaret Wylam but married as Margaret Taylor. The family story is that her father was adopted by the Wylam family but didn't find out about it until later in life after he was married and had children. He found out that his real surname was Taylor and changed the family name back to Taylor from Wylam between 1910 and 1916. This family story from Malcolm Henry Nooning Jr., does not match the historical records found so far. Sebastian may be the maiden name of her father's mother. It has not been researched.

The Census records do not tell why the children, at least with Margaret S., has the birth certificate as Margaret Wylam, with parents Thomas and Mary Wylam. The baptism record names are the same for Margaret S. Reason still unknown.

Data entered for Thomas Taylor and Mary Segalini family is from the 1900 Census in Houtzdale, PA and 1910 Census in Houtzdale, PA
